Of Anger, Wrath, Envy, Malice, and Revenge from the Sages of Old.

1. Private hatred is worse than open malice.
2. Wrath leads Shame on a leash.
3. It is a great marvel to see a wise man angry.
4. He is unhappy that continues in his malice; not thinking of the end.
5. Unhappy is the estate of malicious and envious people.
6. The suspicious, the hasty and the jealous, man lives ever in sorrow.
7. Shame of himself is the end of Indignation.
8. He is not perfectly good that hates his enemy; what is he then, that hates his friend?
9. Debate, Deceit, Contention, and Envy, are the fruits of evil thoughts.
10. It is foolishness, or rather madness, for a man to be angry for that which cannot be amended; or to desire the thing which he may not obtain.
11. Wrath and Hastiness are very evil Counsellors.
12. Quietness is sure; but Rashness is dangerous.
13. Envy and Slander are two brethren; which go evermore together.
14. Forgiveness is a valiant kind of revenge.
15. He hath great rest, that can refrain himself from Anger.
16. Envy has been, is, and shall be, the destruction of many.
17. What is there, that Envy hath not defamed, or Malice left undefiled? Truly, no good thing.
18. Anger is a heaviness and vexation of the mind; desiring to be revenged.
19. Anger is the worker of Enmity and Hatred.
20. Humility, patience, and Fair Speech, are the pacifiers of Anger.
21. Time appeases Anger.
22. Wrath comes of feebleness of Courage, and lack of Wit.
23. Women are sooner angry than men; the sick sooner than the healthy; and old folk be sooner moved than the young.
24. He is envious, that is sorry for good men’s prosperity.
25. An envious man serves to none other purpose but to speak evil, and to slander others.
26. To the wrathful, Anger approaches.
27. Reason so sore abhors Anger, that she flies from a man as soon as he chafes; and will not be present at any of his doings.
