Of the Tongue; of Fair Speech; and of Flattery from the sages of old.

1. Fair and Flattering Speech is an honied snare.
2. A right commendable thing, both in heaven and earth, is a true tongue.
3. There5 is not a worse thing than a deceitful and lying Tongue.
4. Fair Speech in presence, with Good Report in absence, and Manners in fellowship, obtain great friendship.
5. An evil Tongue is sharper han any sword.
6. If thou speak what thou wilt; thou shalt hear what thou wouldest not!
7. The Tongue is the betrayer of the heart.
8. Death delivers a man from all enemies, save the Tongue.
9. He is wise and discreet that can refrain his Tongue.
10. Flattery is a present friend, but an absent enemy.
11. It is a point of Flattery to praise a man to his face.
12. The Tongue of a Fool is the key of his counsel; which in a wise man, Wisdom hath in keeping.
13. The Tongue of a wise man dis in his heart: but the heart of a Fool is in his tongue.
14. Hastiness of Speech causes men to err.
